13057Cross.jpg (34221 bytes)13057. CROSS - SOUTH BEND ?? WES JORDAN - 8-STRIP. 7'6". ENIGMA ??. 2/2. #4/5. 4.0 oz. Medium /Fast. Tenite D/L S/L (Thread lock Seat). Green Jasper. Varnished. This rod has been a puzzle to me since I first saw it. Some of the earmarks of this unsigned rod point directly to the early Cross building efforts of Wes Jordan circa the early 1920's. Other feature speak to the Cross- South Bend venture of the late 20's, early 30's. The rod uses a black Tenite filled Thread lock design reel seat patented by Jordan, the ferrules are the Cross Supreme Ferrules, welted, serrated and knurled, as shown in the 1928 catalog. The stripper is agate and the guides are bronze. The grip is a reverse Half wells and the rod has a perfect action for a DT4 or WF5 line. All of the correct features of a South Bend rod of this vintage. Where my dilemma lies is that this rod is of beautifully executed EIGHT-STRIP construction, to my knowledge never offered by SB. It is well known that Wes built 4, 6, and 8 strip rods at Cross, both single and double-built , but I know of none that came out of South Bend. Of course, it is possible that this rod was constructed originally by Wes as a Cross Forsyth Model in the early 1920's and was later refurbished and upgraded at South bend in the 1930's by Wes Jordan. I am especially inclined to believe that to be the case here, as the extra tip is a perfect taper and action match, but is of six strip construction and clearly from South Bend. Interestingly the color and aesthetics are a perfect match to the original, so it is clear that someone took pains to do a correct job. I also believe the rod was refinished at that later time, because it is wrapped with Black/Green Jasper thread, a color not offered by SB until the mid 1930's, (about when I calculate the re-do was done). All of that said, this rod has a sweet middle-fast action that is a joy to cast for me with a DT4 line. The rod is straight, tight and sound and ready to fish with no work needed. It appears to have been well cared for since the 1930's. The cloth bag and rod case are period replacements, I believe. A bit of a mystery that may never fully solve out, but there is no mystery about the worth of the this rod as a fishing tool. E. $750.00.

13050Dave Cook.jpg (27524 bytes)13050. DAVE COOK BY MONTAGUE. 7'3". CEDAR BROOK #2524. 2/2. #4. 3.5 oz. Medium/Fast. Full Metal S/B. Dark Blue w/ Yellow Decoratives. Varnished. This rod was contract built by Montague as a private label model for the Dave Cook Sporting Goods Store in Denver, Colorado in the 1940's. This is a delightful little delicate dry fly rod with a gentle medium to medium fast action and it appears unused. Most of this rods weight is in the full metal slide band reel seat which puts the weight back behind the hand where it helps make this rod feel a lot more expensive than it is. Nice action, nicely finished out and in perfect fishing condition. Works well with a DT4 line. Original labeled rod bag and Cardboard rod case. M. $395.00.

12985. EDEN CANE. 7'0". Model 704-2. 2/2. #4. 2.8 oz. Medium/Fast. Bamboo/Cork U&D/L N/S S/B. Clear Tan t/Brown. Varnished. NODE LESS CONSTRUCTION. All the weak bamboo nodes are removed in every Eden Cane rod. With these weak spots joint scarfed out and replaced by 18% more solid bamboo power fiber, the results are nothing short of amazing! It was quickly discovered that conventional taper designs did not fully exploit all the the advantages that the node less construction method had to offer. Since rods made without nodes inherently faster and stronger than their conventional counterparts, taper designs were evolved to take full advantage of this lighter blank-to-line size ratio. The results of all this labor intensive effort have become legend. Eden Cane rods simply outperform equivalent conventionally built rods, period! This first of the 2008 build period rods is of Cognac color bamboo with translucent Clear Tan t/Brown wraps and full Premium Grade Cork in the grip & seat. A unique feature of the reel seat is the use of two special Bamboo Strips as the backbone of the seat. This forever prevents crushing of the cork spacer over time by the slide band, a problem common to all cork reels seats of routine design.   The mirror-image tips are dot-marked 1 & 2. The signature wrap is a unique single thread spiral wrap, done to call attention to the single thread wrap tipping in the center of each guide wrap! The hand drawn Mayfly Nymph on the butt above the signature is there to remind the observer of the attention to detail lavished on every Eden Cane rod. wraps and varnish sparkle and are about perfect. The overall aesthetic of this rod is masterful understatement. The stripper is Agatine with Snake Brand snake guides. The N/S Super-Z style ferrules are oxidized as is the N/S seat hardware which features the Eden cane trademark, an Up AND Down locking Cap & Ring seat carrying the EC logo engraved in the Butt cap. This unique seat design allows for the reel placement position to be changed to suit your casting style and feel for balance. The swelled butt is offset at the grip by an oxidized N/S nose check which brackets the magnificent Premium Grade cork Standard Cigar grip. Details abound everywhere, and include single thread edgings centered in the wraps at the guides; a simple, single thread, spiral signature wrap and "mirror image" tips. The taper of this rod is designed to produce an accurate, pleasant and delicate action equally suited to wet or dry fly applications. It is built to place a DT4 or TT4 line wherever you want it, with no effort on your part. It does that, easily, yet somehow it retains the ability to present the fly softly and with grace, and protect ultra fine tippets, a lovely combination. Provided in a cloth rod bag and a first quality true Brass-appointed Aluminum rod case carrying the Freestone, (EC's parent Co.) label. Eden Cane rods are the epitome of the bamboo art and consistently re-enforce the adage that "quality never disappoints".  BRAND NEW.    $3950.00.

13017EdenCane.jpg (32493 bytes)              13017. EDEN CANE. 7'9". Model 7916-10. 3/2. #3/4. 3.7 oz. Medium/Fast. Spalded Burled Maple U/L N/S S/B. Translucent Straw t/Cinnamon. Varnished. More than a decade ago, Eden Cane began its business by building node less rods exclusively. With the weak spot nodes removed and replaced by 18% more bamboo power fiber in every Eden Cane rod it was quickly discovered that conventional taper designs did not fully exploit all the the advantages that the node less construction method had to offer. Since rods made without nodes are inherently faster and stronger than their conventional counterparts, taper designs were evolved that take full advantage of this lighter blank-to-line size ratio. The results of all this labor intensive effort have become legend in a relatively short time. This rod model is presently cataloged as the Model 794-3. It is a flawless Blond color bamboo with translucent Straw t/Cinnamon wraps and a beautifully figured piece of Spalded Burled Canadian Maple wood comprising both the reel seat and the grip nose check. The overall aesthetic of this rod is one of sparkling, yet subtle understatement, blended with rich touches throughout the rod. The stripper is Amber Agatine with bright snakes. The N/S Super-Z style ferrules are bright as is the N/S seat hardware which features the Eden Cane up-locking, single slide band seat, a trademark. The swelled butt takes care of unwanted vibrations while casting and the rod is perfectly varnished. Details abound everywhere, and include "two-turn" thread edgings at the guides, and "mirror" tips. The incredible casting feel of this rod results from a proprietary rod taper designed to produce an accurate, pleasant and delicate action equally suited to wet or dry fly applications. It is designed to place a DT3 or 4 line precisely where you want it, with no effort on your part. It does that, easily, yet somehow it retains the ability to present the fly softly and with grace, a lovely combination. Comes in a cloth partition lined Cordura rod case.    M.      $3450.00

13025ECane86161.jpg (64572 bytes)              13025. EDEN CANE. 8'6". Model 8618-11 Bass/Steel Head. 3/2. #7. 5.9 oz. Medium/Fast. Buckeye Burl U/L N/S S/L w 1" Perm butt. Translucent Honey/Tan t/Cinnamon. Varnished. This rod model had been long awaited as it went through the design and testing process. Some pretty fussy outdoor writers and fly fishing authors were involved in this rods creation and testing. The rod model has been tested by fire and has stood up to all manner of hard use with remarkable results. It has handled a lot of large and very hard fighting Small Mouth and Largemouth Bass and Steel Head and never once faltered in almost two years of brutal testing. A compliment to the perfectly designed and tweaked tapers that cast a 7 line beyond perfection and have the power to handle big fish with ease. This is the very last of this model scheduled to be built for a long while now as Bernard's attention turns to keeping up with the demand for his trout rods. This rod is a magnificent flamed Dark Caramel colored bamboo rod with Honey/Tan translucent wraps and a gorgeous marbleized darker toned Burled Buckeye wood reel seat. The stripper is Red Agatine with bright snakes. The N/S Super-Z style ferrules are bright is the Nickel Silver hardware featuring a mortised, reverse screw lock seat on a striking piece of wood. The Western style Cigar grip features matching N/S front & rear winding check that brings a superb finishing touch to a modern masterpiece. NODE-LESS CONSTRUCTION. All offending nodes are removed in construction of every Eden Cane rod. The results are nothing short of amazing with the addition of 18% more bamboo power fibers to e very rod. The action of this exciting rod is one of the smoothest I've ever cast in a heavyweight cane rod. It is designed to punch a DT7/WF8 line and a big, wind resistant fly into a breeze, yet, it is beautifully balanced and does not hammer the caster. This rod seems tailor made for the Triangle Taper 7 Line and Canadian Small Mouth lakes & rivers and Steel Head and Salmon rivers. Comes in a partitioned cloth rod bag, all housed in a handmade hard leather rod case by Arne Mason. Pure class and performance too!   Brand New Condition.   M.   $3450.00

13037. GILLUM - HAROLD STEELE. 8'0". TROUT. 3/2. #5. 4 oz. Medium/Fast. Cedar rev S/L. Bronze. Varnished. Even though this rod possesses the power and quick feel that Pinky Gillum's rods are famous for, it still throws a tight looped DT5 dry fly line with much delicacy. This later Gillum rod (serial # 1786) is in fine shape, totally sound and fish able, in fact, very near to new. Cedar filled, Payne influenced, reversed Aluminum screw lock reel seat with a Western style cigar grip. The cloth bag and aluminum case are original with the correct paper label still in place on the case. This is a superb fishing tool in every respect, and the best possible kind of rod investment since because of its prime used condition you can enjoy occasional use of the rod without compromising its value or its desirability as a collectible rod while it continues to appreciate in value.               13020. HARDY. 8'0". The Fairchild Rod. 3/1. #5. 3-7/8 oz. .Medium. Cork Universal S/B. Green w/full Intermediates. Varnished. This wonderful Hardy trout rod built in 1938 clearly demonstrates the level of craftsmanship that Hardy was famous for. The rod has has a single tip and although there is a second tip with the rod, it does not match. Curiously, the ferrule fits and matches, so you are all set if you choose to have another tip made for the rod. (It is worth doing!) White Agate tip-top and matching Agate stripper. Reverse English snakes and Walnut ferrule plugs round out the detailed touches of this easy-casting, true medium action fly rod. The full English intermediate wraps really set this rod off from the routine bamboo look. The rod remains in excellent original condition throughout, in the original cloth rod bag and a pre-war small diameter Hardy Aluminum rod case. Fitted with a cigar grip and all cork slide band seat to take any size reel foot. It is sweet with a DT5 line and will prove to be a joy to fish.    E.     $795.00

19992. HARDY. 12'0". SET OF THREE A. H. E. WOOD Steelhead & Salmon Rods. 3/2. #7/8/9. 12 to 13 oz. Spey action without Steel Center. Cork sliding S/L seat. Chinese Red. Varnished. A magnificent set of three, brand new condition rods patterned after the original set of rods designed in the 1920's by A. H. E. Wood and detailed in Jock Scott's book "Greased Line Fishing". These 3 exceptional rod models were offered by Hardy from 1928 to 1952, when they were discontinued Noted Steelhead angler and accomplished caster, Chuck Doke special ordered these rods built for him by Hardy in 2 complete sets in 1965 and said it took Hardy nearly 3 years to find bamboo of high enough quality to build the 6 rods without the Steel Rod Center, as were the originals. (Steel rod center construction was originally used to allow lesser quality cane to be used in Salmon Rod construction and still provide the power needed to cast with these rods. It worked, but added a lot of unnecessary weight and interfered with the action of the rods and also suffered delamination woes if improperly stored. The process was  eclipsed by using double building methods). These 2 sets were completed and delivered in 1968 as attested to by their "J" series serial number. Doke, who fished with Stan Bogdan Alec Jackson, Syd Glasso and others fished one set and put this set back for posterity. He said these rods can do things that no other bamboo 2-handed rod can. Interestingly, they were designed to be able to be used either double or single handed, thanks to the Hardy "Universal Style" reel seats. These 3 rods are all 12 feet long and each takes one heavier line size of double taper line, (one a 7 weight, second an 8 weight and third a 9 weight). They are in never used, new condition, with the original clear plastic wraps on the grips. Weights are 12-1/4 , 12-3/4 and 13-1/4 ounces respectively. Fitted with reinforced twist-lock ferrules, clear Agate stripper guides and clear Agate tip-tops, perfect circle bridge guides, original bag, bag tags, and sculptured aluminum ferrule plugs. These rods represent an opportunity for their owner to preserve an important bit of angling history by owning this set as it may now well be the only   set of these incredible 2-hand rods left in existence.  Hardy will no longer make these rods today, as the craftsmen who crafted these rods 40 years ago are gone, but, if done today their cost would exceed $3500 per copy, making this one-of-a-kind set an excellent investment at only $4900.    M.     $4900.00.

Note; Please do not confuse this matched set of THREE brand new condition, UNUSED Hardy Rods with the two unmatched USED rods from the now broken other set (and therefore lesser priced) that are currently advertised on another dealer's web site. THAT NOW MAKES THIS SET THE ONLY COMPLETE AND ORIGINAL ONE IN EXISTENCE!! Superb tackle investment.

19993. HARDY - L.R.H.  Salmon  SPEY.  14'0".  Split Bamboo.  3/2.  #10.  24 oz.  Spey Casting.  Special Slide Locking Seat.  Red w/ Dark Green Edgings. Varnished. Made in 1968 by Hardy of England. Made continuously from 1948 to 1967. This rod was made to special order for Chuck Doke, noted Steelhead Fisherman, after being officially discontinued and is possibly the very last of this magnificent model ever made. Hardy's famed Palakona Spilt Bamboo two-handed salmon rod with serial number J3994. The rod shows no use with long two-handed grip with down locking reel seat, rubber end cap, wrapped in red silk tipped dark green and the ferrules are wrapped in copper color thread. Finished with blued N/S screw locking ferrules and ferrule plugs. The stripping guide is translucent brown synthetic agate and tip tops are clear synthetic agate, original bag with label still attached. Delivered originally without tube, but fitted by Doke with a custom Hard Leather Wes Jordan Style Rod case from Orvis. This is a serious salmon rod with plenty of power to throw a long line on big water. It will require a 4/0 or 5/0 size reel and would be ideally mated to a Hardy Cascapedia, Vom Hofe or Zwarg Salmon Reel. With that (or similar), reel it is correctly balanced. Hardy won't build this rod today but if they did, it would sell for more than $3500.00. Here are some of the impressive dimensions. The bamboo ahead of the grip is 5/8" in diameter, the stripping guide is 1" in diameter, and the butt ferrule is over 1/2" in diameter and almost 4 inches long. The guides are a bridge guides for strength and are double wrapped. All fittings are highly polished. These rods are almost never found in this condition.        M.    $1950.00.

Note; Please do not confuse this brand new condition, UNUSED ROD with another of the same model selling as a USED rod (and therefore lesser priced) that is currently advertised on another dealer's web site.  Aside from the absolute brand new condition of the rod this one even has a custom leather rod case. That other isn't & doesn't.

Size 0-3/4 ferrule provides a delicate medium dry fly action for a DT4 line. Rod, bag and aluminum case are factory original and the rod remains in very good used condition with original bag label present. Another exceptional opportunity for the fisherman looking for a quality classic cane rod in a very modern fishable length. Outstanding medium trout rod.  Very smooth and delicate delivery and an easy action make Gary's rods a strong favorite. According to build records currently being compiled for an upcoming book on Gary and his rods, this particular rod was the first rod built using a lighter, more delicate set of tapers he worked up for this model. It truly has a lovely feel to it.   N/M.  $2850.00.

13024. JENKINS ROD CO. 7'0". GA70L-112. 2/2. #3/4. 3.2 oz. Medium/Fast Dry Fly. Mortised Cherry N/S S/B. Translucent Light Honey. Varnished. The Jenkins rod has been hand crafted in Denver since 1960 by both Charlie and Steve Jenkins, father and son. Charlie retired in the late 1990's when Steve took over full responsibility for the work. I've always been an admirer of the Jenkins rod, partly because of the magnificent way it performs and partly because of its simple beauty. This rod truly exceeds on both counts. The action of this lightest of the models is perfect for a DT3/WF4 or TT3 line and the rod shows lovely Blonde cane color set off by the Honey wraps, bright ferrules and impeccable varnish work. Immediately puts one in mind of a lovely classic Garrison rod. The reel seat is beautifully mortised Cherry, a Jenkins trade-mark, with a handsome set of bright N/S cap and ring hardware. Comes in the cloth bag and brass capped aluminum case. Just Built.  BRAND NEW.  $1700.00

Virtually unused. N/M. $1095.00.

Bob Lancaster has been refining his rod tapers to enhance the semi- parabolic type of action popularized by Paul Young for over 30 years. He has taken that full feeling action to a new casting plane all the while retaining a delicate feel. Combine a truly magnificent casting action, a finely crafted product and a very reasonable price and you have a clear winner in our book. This model is not a part of Bob's regular line. He built a couple of these just for a "change of pace" and he only does that when the mood moves him, (last time was four years ago), so this model is a tough rod to get, and no, he won't take orders for it. This rod has a strong family resemblance to the "Para" Series rods by Young in length, appearance and feel. It seems to feel as powerful as a Para 15, and handles a TT5 line with complete authority.       19976. LEONARD - MAXWELL PROTOTYPE. 7'0". Model 38DF-5. 2/3. #5. 3.5 oz. Medium/Fast. Curly Maple N/S S/B. Translucent Tan. Varnished. Made in 1981 by Tom Maxwell as part of the development of rod tapers and to test out new wrap colors at Leonard. Prototype rods from any maker are rare and these special Maxwell Leonards are certainly no exception. In fact, it is believed there are fewer than 20 LEONARD- MAXWELL PROTOTYPE RODS IN EXISTENCE. This one was built to test beefed up 38H tapers by moving the model up to a 5 weight rod. I must confess it is one of the nicest casting short rods for a #5 line I've ever cast. Kudos to Tom. It is marked with the special serial number 495P in Maxwell's hand. Built with a medium fast dry fly action, the rod casts beautifully and best with a Triangle Taper 5. The rod finish is impeccable. Everything is in outstanding fishing condition. One tip suffered a node crack at the factory when built and it was given a minor repair overwrap to make it sound again. (Visible on the middle tip in photo). At that point the rod was treated to a factory replacement tip, so the rod has THREE matching tips. Maxwell Leonards are very scarce and difficult to find in nearly perfect condition. Add the value of a one-of-a-kind prototype with THREE TIPS and you can readily appreciate the significance of this rod to the Leonard devotee.    E.    $3950.00.   SOLD

13019. LEONARD - H. L. - ANTIQUE.    9'6”.     Mills Standard.     3/2. #5/6. 5 oz. Medium. Full N/S S/B w/ side rails. Antique Gold with full Intermediates. Varnished. This Victorian Era to Modern Era Transition Leonard rod is from Calcutta cane with many intermediate wraps. All sections are straight, undamaged and full length and all thirteen guides, including the stripper, are loose ring type; (the guide rings are brass and the saddles are nickel silver). The ferrules and reel seat are nickel silver. The female ferrule on the butt section has a soldered seam and machined welt. The other ferrules match it in design but are seamless. The reel seat is inscribed, " Standard-Mills & Son, Makers, N.Y." It is a very delicate rod with a modern medium action for a DT5/WF6 line The cork handle is made up of both ¼" and 3/8" cork rings, is 4 3/4" long and 3/4" in diameter at the thickest part, "quite smallish" as was common to Leonard rods of the era., but then, maybe it was made for a woman's hand. The tip-tops are 3/64" ID. Fine and delicate is the correct description of this magnificent rod. It comes with its original bamboo tip tube and heavy cloth outer sack that is in good condition. The rod has been professionally restored to exacting original specifications and the work is breathtaking; better than original. This rod will light up any significant rod collection.     M/R.    $895.00

13039. MORAN - TOM. 7'6". MODEL 843. 2/2. #3/4. 3.75 oz. Medium/Fast. Burled Maple D/L N/S S/B. Translucent. Varnished. English rod maker Tom Moran's reputation as a builder of the finest rods is as substantial as it is because he simply builds rods that are nearly perfect. His efforts have sparkle to take your breath away. Tom's creative touches are everywhere. from the elegant light flame, medium-toned Caramel cane color, to the single thread wrap edgings to the graceful, highly figured Maple reel seat with finely knurled, oxidized Nickel Silver slide band, to the hand-turned Mahogany ferrule plug, to the hand made leather rod case. If workmanship speaks for itself, then this rod simply shouts quality. What it does with a DT3 or WF4 line is a whole other sermon. I suppose there may be other rods out there that may cast as well as a Moran, but I can think of none that do it any better or look as good while getting it done. Everyone, in his or her lifetime, deserves a fine cane rod this good. Treat yourself. Almost New. With Tom's output these days tenuous at best, you really shouldn't let this rod get away. N/M. $2950.00

This rod, serial # 9598 was built in November of 1950 by George Reid. It comes in the original paper labeled aluminum rod case and cloth bag and is factory rated for an HDH (DT6) line. It casts with absolute authority and has a delightful medium-faster action that is perfect for heavy trouting and effective small mouth fishing. Make no mistake, this is a well made high grade Orvis rod from a time period when quality was King. It certainly is one of the nicest of this model we've seen. There is a professional 2" overwrap on one of the tips from hook dig damage, but everything appears sound and fishable without concern. A very handsome rod with the original cloth bag and aluminum rod case. This rod model is scarce and an historically important rod for the serious Orvis collector. It is also an exceptionally nice fishing tool. E. $575.00.
